Howard urged to get tough on gun owners

A recent report issued by University of Tasmania has found that all Australian States and Territories have deviated from the 1996 National Firearms Agreement. Interviewed on ABC radio, (21. Dec. 2006) Law School Professor Kate Warner has claimed that in many States, children were allowed to shoot.

Roland Brown, of National Gun Control has urged the Prime Minister John Howard to get tough on gun owners.

No club armourers licences yet

The NSW Firearms Registry, currently under the control of an anti-shooter zealot, has lost a few rounds in the Administrative Decisions Tribunal.

The Nazi Greens

The NSW Greens have published their policies on their website in preparation for the election in March. Among them is a policy on firearms.

The policy would do Hitler proud, despite owing its origins to the avowed hard leftie (and former convenor of the Coalition For Gun Control), Lee Rhiannon. Here are a few key aspects:

Chapman the nanny

What is it about Simon Chapman that makes him think he knows what’s best for the rest of us?

First, he hates smoking. However, it’s not sufficient not to smoke himself. He wants to ban smoking (directly or indirectly) so that nobody else has a choice. He wants to make the choice for us.

He also hates guns and has now co-authored a paper with another notorious anti-gun obsessive (Philip Alpers) that argues the Howard gun bans resulted in fewer firearms deaths. His aim, as with smoking, is to get rid of guns entirely (or at least those legally owned by anyone except the state).

Just catch criminals

The following story shows how theft of firearms is inevitable. No amount of compliance with safe storage rules by firearms licensees would have prevented it.

It raises an important question. If the military can lose firearms like this (and the police have shown they are capable of losing weapons as well), where is the value in using scarce police time and resources to harass sporting shooters on this? They would be better catching criminals.

Hunting and state control

The NSW Greens have issued another press release criticising the addition of a further 39 state forests to the NSW Game Council’s hunting areas. Their press release is copied below. Robert Borsak’s post on the same topic is also copied, based on a media article. Borsak is Chairman of the Game Council.

The Greens have opposed the Game Council from the beginning. However, plenty of hunters are reserving judgement as well. It is without doubt a major new government intrusion into an activity traditionally seen as a basic freedom. After all, the origin of hunting is to feed the family. Yet the Game Council’s supporters argue there are substantial compensating benefits. Are they right?
